NASA astronaut Doug Hurley said he hopes the successful arrival of the SpaceX Dragon capsule at the International Space Station on Sunday encourages the nation. It was the first time a privately built and owned spacecraft carried astronauts to the space station in its more than 20 years of existence. "In that vein, let's just say, for those about to launch, we salute you".
The sparkly plush toy served as a "zero-gravity indicator": It wasn't strapped in, so once the dino started to float around, the astronauts and other observers knew the ship had left the pull of Earth's gravity.
It was the first time a privately built and owned spacecraft carried astronauts to the orbiting lab in its almost 20 years. The astronauts said that it performed well during the mission. "Tremor", a blue sequined dinosaur accompanying them - the toy chosen by their sons - was also shown by Behnken.
Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" also stood as a fitting track to wake up in space to, before the crew docked at the International Space Station, as the metal hit sports lines as: "We sail through endless skies / stars shine like eyes / the black night sighs". The shiny dinosaur drifted in and out of view. "I'm sure they would rather be here, given the opportunity, but hopefully they're proud of this as well".
Explaining how the contact with the astronauts happened, Saiyadh, who has been a ham radio operator for 35 years, said, "It is not something new".
As the first astronauts to fly aboard Crew Dragon for its maiden human test flight, Behnken and Hurley were very satisfied with the overall quality of the capsule.
If that wasn't enough to get them going, once they were in route to the International Space Station, the crew woke up to Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" jamming along in space prior to docking.
After a ideal launch on Saturday afternoon, NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley made history as the first astronauts to arrive at the International Space Station on a commercial spacecraft. It's not yet clear whether Tremor the apatosaurus will come back with them.
