Emma Watson is speaking out.
The social media initiative, aimed at muting self-promotional and commercial content in favor of amplifying black voices, involves supporters of Black Lives Matter posting a black square on their Instagram account, followed by information concerning police brutality, community updates, and the like.
Fans are calling out the Little Woman actress for putting a white border around her black square post so it still looked good online, as it goes against the goal of #BlackOutTuesday, which is to stop self-promotion for a day so that black voices and information on the Black Lives Matter movement can come to the front of the conversation.
After posting three black tiles, and nothing else, the actor was accused of performative activism, with one pointing out the tiles had white borders to seemingly fit in with the rest of her Instagram posts.
"Is this all you have?" "Emma i'm [sic] so disappointed in you, you claim to be such an activist for everyone and this is all you do? wtf", commented another individual.
"I have the utmost respect for you", said one commenter while another added, "She is supporting and getting the message out there as she has the privilege of having such a big platform what more do you want??"
"I was holding off posting until #blackouttuesday ended in the United Kingdom.", she captioned a piece of art.
"I stand with you", she captioned the post, which read, "There is so much racism both in our past and present that is not acknowledged or accounted for". White supremacy is one of the systems of hierarchy and dominance, of exploitation and oppression, that is tightly stitched into society. "As a white person, I have benefited from this".
She emphasised on the importance of working even harder internally and externally to tackle the "structural and institutional racism".
"I'm still learning about the many ways I unconsciously support and uphold a system that is structurally racist. over the coming days, I'll be using my bio link and twitter to share links to resources I've found useful for my own researching, learning and listening".
