With the USA scheduled to play host to the annual G7 this year, the administration's original plan to host the gathering at the Trump-owned Doral golf resort in Miami was abandoned last fall after critics accused the president of seeking to profit off the meeting.
Nations around the world continue to grapple with the virus, which has led to the deaths of almost 330,000 people and crippled the global economy.
French President Macron weighs his decision to travel to the United States upon "the importance of the G7 in the response to the Covid-19 pandemic".
The leaders and their ministers have, at different times, conducted video meetings about coronavirus since the outbreak.
Trump on Wednesday tweeted, "I am considering rescheduling the G-7, on the same or similar date".
"The other members are also beginning their COMEBACK", he wrote.
Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it an interesting idea, but said leaders need a lot more details.Читайте также: Liverpool players wont endanger force players to return to training Klopp
President Trump has announced he anticipates this year's Group of Seven summit will take place primarily at the White House.
"What a show of strength and optimism to have all of the leaders of these countries come together at the White House and pursue business as usual as we move forward through this pandemic", he added.
"We're going to need to keep talking about not just how we get through this COVID-19 pandemic, but how we restore the global economy to its rightful activities", Trudeau said.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she would "definitely fight for multilateralism" whether or not that was during an in-person or virtual summit, and stressed she chose her words "with care" when pressed by Associated Press on whether she would consider actually making the transatlantic trip.
The G-7 is an annual meeting of top leaders from the United States, France, Germany, Canada, Japan, Italy and the United Kingdom.
Holding the summit would underscore Trump's message that America can now reopen on the assumption that the worst of the coronavirus crisis has passed, even as many public health experts warn that a rush to do that could lead to a new wave of infections.
If the summit happens, the United States will request that delegations be pared back to minimum personnel and would curtail nonessential events like the spousal program. Europeans and Canadians are now unable to travel to the United States as a result of a ban imposed by the Trump administration in a bid to contain the spread of the virus. And earlier this week the US and Canada agreed to keep their shared border closed to nonessential travel through June 21.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
