The Bretton Wood institutions made the request in a joint statement released on Wednesday.
Part of the World Bank, the IDA is one of the largest sources of assistance for the world's 76 poorest countries, providing zero or low interest loans spread over 30 years or more, and grants to some distressed nations.
76 countries are now eligible to receive IDA resources.
Nigeria is on blend credit terms with IDA but also creditworthy for some International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) borrowing.
We invite G20 leaders to task the WBG and the International Monetary Fund to make these assessments, including identifying the countries with unsustainable debt situations, and to prepare a proposal for comprehensive action by official BILATERAL creditors to address both the financing and debt relief needs of IDA countries.
"With immediate effect-and consistent with national laws of the creditor countries-the World Bank Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) call on all official bilateral creditors to suspend debt payments from IDA countries that request forbearance".
"The coronavirus outbreak is likely to have severe economic and social consequences for IDA countries" which will face "immediate liquidity needs to tackle challenges posed by the coronavirus outbreak", the organization said.
The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund said it is imperative to provide a global sense of relief.
The move aims to help countries that are home to two-thirds of the world's population living in extreme poverty - largely in sub-Saharan Africa - and qualify for the most generous, low-priced loans from the International Development Association (IDA) financed by wealthier nations.
They said they will seek endorsement for the Proposal at the Development Committee during the Spring Meetings scheduled for (April 16-17). The global community would welcome G20 support for this Call to Action.
