Laura Prepon's relationship with her mother is complicated.
"My mother taught me bulimia. I always thought of myself as this strong, confident woman, but it became a compulsion that would completely debilitate me", Prepon admitted.
At 5'10, Prepon was a healthy and athletic teen, but when she dipped her toe into the world of modelling with an open casting at an agency, she was told to lose 11 kilos.
Marjorie would weigh her daughter every morning and take her measurements, praising her daughter when she dropped to just 47 kilos - a unsafe weight for her height. She eventually got down to 105 lbs., where her mother said she was so "proud".
In her latest book, "You & I, as Mothers" - billed as part-memoir, part-guidebook - Laura Prepon reveals that her mother taught her how to have an eating disorder. The 40-year-old actress knew what her mother meant and it became a bonding experience, "a shared secret".
Now that her mother is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's, Prepon confesses any anger towards her mother has gone. Prepon's mother had been bulimic in college and met her husband when she lost weight, creating a false equivalence that "being thin equaled success". "I think she was trying to help me in her own way", she said.
"In order to have a real conversation about motherhood, we need to talk about what's really going on, the stresses, the anxieties, how we were mothered", Prepon told People in a recent interview.
"I don't want to be angry with her, especially now, because I don't know how much time we have left. I want those moments when she is present to be good", Prepon explained.
