The West Australia state government on Thursday said that nobody would be permitted to disembark the German-operated MV Artania after seven of 800 foreign passengers on board tested positive for COVID-19 unless there was a "life threatening emergency".
Artania, which is now anchored off the west of Perth, is carrying 800 guests and 500 crew members. As per global media reports, 800 people will be housed in the existing and vacated island, which includes a hostel, bungalows, cabins and dormitories.
With the number of Covid-19 cases rising quickly, Australia has introduced a series of restrictions, including the forced closure of pubs, restaurants and cinemas.
Eight hundred Australian passengers from the Vasco da Gama cruise ship will reside on the 19-square-kilometer (7 square miles) island just off the coast of Perth for 14 days.
According to reports, passengers will be ferried off in groups to the island which is a major tourist hotspot and home to the lovely quokkas.
"This ship needs to leave immediately".
"I want the Commonwealth to make that happen", McGowan said.
Passengers will not be allowed to disembark from cruise ships in NSW, the state's premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Thursday.
Nine people died as a result of their infections.
A spokeswoman for MSC Cruises which owns the Magnifica declined to comment on where the vessel would go.
Although well below levels elsewhere in the world, the pace of Australia's infections is starting to pick up speed, reaching almost 2,800 cases and 13 deaths.
RNA, the genetic material of the virus that causes Covid-19, "was identified on a variety of surfaces in cabins of both symptomatic and asymptomatic infected passengers up to 17 days after cabins were vacated on the Diamond Princess but before disinfection procedures had been conducted", said researchers.
Some state leaders have also flagged they are willing to push for tougher restrictions on social activities if Prime Minister Scott Morrison's government does not move fast enough. Only citizens and permanent residents and their families will be allowed to enter Australia.
"We are upgrading the travel ban on Australians to level four for the entire world".
