Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, said on Wednesday that the United States should be prepared for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to be seasonally cyclical.
Fauci said the USA government will soon set guidelines to help Americans who recover from a coronavirus infection determine when it is safe to return to regular life.
Tracking has revealed that cases are appearing in the southern hemisphere as they go into their winter season.
"And if, in fact, they have a substantial outbreak, it will be inevitable that we need to be prepared that we'll get a cycle around the second time".
Fauci said there is now enough data because multiple different countries have gone through various phases of their individual outbreaks. "And if you do that effectively you don't have an outbreak", Fauci said.
"They have very very few cases, but what they're starting to see, as they're relaxing the constraints on travel, that they're getting imported cases", Fauci said.
"I know we'll be successful in putting this down now, but we really need to be prepared for another cycle", Fauci, the nation's top expert on infectious disease, told reporters at the daily coronavirus briefing.
"I think we're going to have to remember we don't want to import cases in", Fauci cautioned.
Dr. Deborah Birx, the response coordinator for the White House coronavirus task force, echoed Fauci at Wednesday's press briefing.
Fauci started by saying "it's a back-and-forth, the president clearly listens" and telling Ingraham POTUS has an "aspirational goal hoping that we might be able to do it by a certain date". "I've got to do my job as a scientist and others have other things to do".
Fauci said this emphasises the need to rapidly develop and test a vaccine for the novel coronavirus.
