Prior to The View, Huntsman was a co-host on the relatively short-lived MSNBC panel show The Cycle, from 2013 until its cancellation in 2015.
Now in Season 23, The View's dais consists of Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Meghan McCain and Whoopi Goldberg.
Huntsman's surprise departure comes at a period of pronounced drama at "The View", with numerous reports of turmoil between Meghan McCain and the other co-hosts.
Said The View executive producers Hilary Estey McLoughlin, Candi Carter and Brian Teta in a statement, "Abby brought a unique, intelligent, insightful and relatable voice to our table". I applaud you and thank you for welcoming me to the family on day-one.
"We will miss her warm presence at the studio both at the table and behind the scenes", they continued.
Huntsman also sent a note to staffers, saying her time on the "iconic" show needed to come to an end in order to support her father. "You know I think the world of all of you". "You're some of the most talented, hard-working and genuine people I've ever worked with".
Huntsman's official title will be senior advisor of her father's campaign.
"ABC will always hold a special place in my heart, and so will all of you", she added.
Jon Huntsman Jr. left the governorship in the middle of his second term in 2009 to serve as ambassador to China in the Obama administration. "She will always be a part of our family at The View and ABC News and we welcome her back to have a seat at the table anytime". "I'm so proud of you and I'm so happy for you".
"It's not often in life that you get these moments to go fight for something that you are so passionate about", she said of her decision.
