Women and gays have been propping up the Oscars ratings for decades, and you just dared to deny us both a Beyoncé performance and the ability to say the words "Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lopez"? This is the 12th time an actor has pulled off the feat. "I couldn't even get an Oscar nomination because these bougie b****es think that they're better than me". That's an honour that can now be claimed by Rocketman (original song), Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (makeup and hairstyling), The Lighthouse (cinematography), Ad Astra (sound mixing) and, for Best Visual Effects, The Lion King, Avengers: Endgame, and Star Wars, which was also nominated for its score. She's the third person to get acting and songwriting nominations for the same film, and all were recent. Mary J. Blige did it in 2018 for "Mudbound" and Lady Gaga did it previous year for "A Star Is Born".
In fact, 2020 nominee Martin Scorsese has more nominations on his own than all the women directors combined-something that has annoyed many social media users.
In the 90-year history of the Oscars, only five female directors have gotten a nomination in the category, with Gerwig preceded by Lina Wertmuller, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola and Kathryn Bigelow. Both are up for best actor, Banderas for "Pain and Glory" and Pryce for "The Two Popes". Despite being much younger, the category's other three nominees, Adam Driver, Leonardo DiCaprio and Joaquin Phoenix, all have multiple Oscar nominations. However, he said the ceremony would still be "very entertaining". JLo was expected to receive a nomination for Actress in a Supporting Role.
"The Irishman" helped Netflix to 24 nominations - the first time it has ever topped the studio count. Five of those, most recently "Roma" previous year, won the foreign film Oscar but not best picture.
South Korean class satire "Parasite", from Bong Joon-ho, secured the final best director slot, meaning once again no women made the shortlist. "They are: "Ford v. Ferrari"; "The Irishman"; "Jojo Rabbit"; "Joker"; "Little Women"; "Marriage Story"; "1917"; Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood"; "Parasite". His father, Alfred Newman, won nine Oscars in 43 nominations. It, however, did get a nod for its original song "Into The Unknown".
