City have won the Premier League under Guardiola in the past two seasons and, while they were pushed all the way by Liverpool last term, the 2017-18 success was similar to the Reds' current tilt in its dominance.
"It can happen. The records are always there to be broken. He played well but, as I said, he's not going to solve all the problems we have", Guardiola said.
"Sooner or later it will happen, either this season or in the future, history speaks clearly about that. It is not easy to beat Liverpool, they have found a way to win games".
Laporte was badly missed, but Guardiola has warned against expecting too much of the French centre-back.
"He was good [against Sheffield United]", Guardiola said.
Pep Guardiola's star-studded side booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 4-1 win over a spirited Port Vale outfit earlier this month.
Winger Leroy Sane is now their only major absentee with the knee injury that has kept him out for most of the season.
"He's a guy who helps with our build-up, he helps us keep the ball better and because of that we are not as vulnerable to counter-attacks". Basically it is that.
"He's strong in the air, fast and has a special personality".
"But maybe we could cancel the replays, have less teams in the Championship or Premier League".
Guardiola, who said City would not be training overseas during the upcoming mid-season break, preferring to stay at home, confirmed winger Leroy Sane is now the club's only injury absence.
"It is impossible, Eric Garcia is not going to move", he said. I don't know if he has offers.
Pep Guardiola insists he enjoys the FA Cup and its traditions but would like to see replays scrapped.
