Meanwhile on Wednesday, the federal NDP health critic Don Davies said while there are no confirmed cases in Canada, worldwide cases of the virus are troubling to Canadians and reinforce the need for on-going monitoring and preparedness.
"To my knowledge, trying to contain a city of 11 million people is new to science", Gauden Galea, the World Health Organization's representative in China, told The Associated Press in an interview at the WHO's Beijing office. "I left home at around 8:30 a.m. and all passengers on board the bus wore masks", he said. Other cases have been reported in the U.S., Japan, South Korea and Thailand.
Two Chinese nationals in Vietnam have tested positive for the coronavirus and are being treated in hospital, officials said.
In the current outbreak, China has been credited with sharing information rapidly, and President Xi Jinping has emphasized that as a priority.
China locked down three cities at the epicentre of a new coronavirus outbreak that has killed 17 people and infected at least 634, as health authorities around the world took action to prevent a global pandemic.
The "large-scale events" to mark the new year include traditional temple fairs that have attracted mass crowds of tourists in recent years.

Officials don't want to repeat the mistakes of the past. For months, even after the illness had spread around the world, China parked patients in hotels and drove them around in ambulances to hide the true number of cases and avoid WHO experts.
On further analysis, the researchers found evidence that the 2019-nCoV may have resided in snakes before being transmitted to humans. "It is necessary to release epidemic information in a timely manner and deepen worldwide co-operation".
Many countries are screening travelers from China for illness, especially those arriving from Wuhan.
Authorities have said this new virus originated in a seafood market in Wuhan that "conducted illegal transactions of wild animals". Mutations have the possibility of making a virus more deadly or contagious.
On Tuesday, the Chinese Communist Party asked provincial leaders to be as transparent as possible and warned against concealing the outbreak of infections or putting political interests ahead of public health.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said it will decide whether to declare the outbreak a global health emergency, which would step up the worldwide response.
The new virus is similar to the one which caused the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003, infecting 8422 people, and killing more than 900, they said. Countries typically resist the notion that they have a crisis within their borders and may argue strenuously for other control measures.
"Certainly, that's what happened with the SARS outbreak in 2002".
According to the CBSA, there remains a "high likelihood that travellers on connecting flights from Wuhan will be arriving in Canada".
