Though the new three-and-a-half hour gangster epic from director Martin Scorsese is still screening in some select theaters, it's also available on the streaming platform and can now be viewed in all the ways Netflix can be watched: On a phone on the subway, on a treadmill at the gym, etc. Screenwriter Aaron-Stewart Ahn (Mandy) even posted a popular video to Twitter of himself watching The Irishman on his phone while driving a motorbike.
"She was very powerful and that's what it was", he said.
In November, Paquin, 37, responded to the critics, defending her role in the film and calling the opportunity a "privilege".
In The Irishman, the actress portrays Peggy Sheeran, the daughter of mafia hitman Frank Sheeran, played by De Niro.
"She's terrific and it resonates", De Niro added.
De Niro praised Paquin's role in an interview with USA Today. His opinion joins the scores of people who felt that Paquin's largely silent performance was a standout and powerful element of The Irishman, while others felt that she was underused. "I think sometimes a look is worth a thousand words and the internalized judgement that she has passed on her father is not something that she would be able to verbalize, not at that stage of her life".
Here's how the conversation - if you want to call it that - happens in the film between De Niro and Paquin's characters, according to CNN Entertainment.
While Paquin's Peggy occupies limited screen time, a younger version, played by child actress Lucy Gallina, commands additional, pivotal scenes that set up her troubling relationship with her murderous father -so that when the "True Blood" alum finally says her piece as an adult, it holds heartbreaking weight.
That's the entire exchange after which Paquin never speaks again in the film.
Here's what Anna Paquin had to say earlier this month when the criticism about her few lines in The Irishman popped up and she was accused of being "forced" to take the role.
Rodrigo Prieto, Scorsese' cinematographer, who has been performing camera tests for the movie, said the principal photography will start in March 2020. "Guys, I hate to break it to you but it doesn't work that way".
Paquin replied to the tweet with the following: "Nope, nobody was doing any 'ordering, '" Paquin tweeted. This Christmas, I'm grateful for a new film by Martin Scorsese.
