The Tampa Bay Lightning saw the Washington Capitals score two goals in a 46 second span early in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and go on to drop a 5-2 decision Saturday at Amalie Arena. The goal came at 6:42.
In their last matchup on November 29, Washington won 4-3.
At 9:31 of the second period, Kucherov received a blast from the Washington Capitals quarterback John Carlson directly from the lace on top of his right shoulder and fell to the ice.
Samsonov (8-2-1) played in front of his father, who made the trip from Russian Federation to see his son play for the first time in National Hockey League. Braden Holtby registered 30 saves on 32 shots in the winning effort.
Point tied it 1-1 at 5:45 of the second with a power-play goal from the low slot.
Eller made it 2-1 at 1:58 of the third period, and Hathaway made it 3-1 45 seconds later at 2:43. Rutta's wrister from the right circle cut it to 3-2 in the third, but Oshie scored his third goal in two games to make it 4-2.
Stamkos leads the Lightning with 13 goals, adding 16 assists and totaling 29 points.
The Lightning had plenty of opportunities to score early in he first period, but it would be Washington who got on the board first, as Nicklas Backstrom took advantage of a Jan Rutta giveaway, the puck deflecting off Ondrej Palat's foot and right onto his stick, easily beating Vasilevskit for a 1-0 lead they'd keep through the first intermisison.
The Capitals are 20-6 in their last 26 games overall. The favorite is 5-2 in the last seven meetings. Oshie recorded a team-high 3 points for the Capitals. From the point of view of the entire team, Tampa Bay seems much less intimidating so far with 16-12-3 than its 128 points (62-16-4) that set records last season. The best record in hockey belonged to the Lightning last season and they are still fully capable of playing at that level on any given night. I like the way Tampa Bay has played lately and it is always a tough out at home.
"I feel good the whole game", Samsonov said.
