In Gerrit Cole Sweepstakes, Yankees Concerned with LA Preference

The New York Yankees have been widely reported to have ace Gerrit Cole at the top of their off-season wish list, but according to Jon Heyman, they might be scared of Cole picking a Southern California team - Angels or Dodgers - over the Big Apple.

In addition to the Yankees, Strasburg, a San Diego native, is expected to draw interest from his hometown Padres, although Rosenthal writes many "in the industry believe he will return to the [Washington] Nationals".

This might be tricky since Rendon and Strasburg's agent is Scott Boras, who's notorious for long negotiations to get his client's the most money he can.

Rosenthal adds it's possible one of the starters will sign as early as the winter meetings beginning next week in San Diego.


Cole attended high school at Orange Lutheran in Orange County, but also attended UCLA in Los Angeles County.

The 2019 World Series Most Valuable Player has started to listen to his first free-agent pitches. He opted out of the final four years and $100 million of his contract with the Washington Nationals.

The 29-year-old is coming off an outstanding 2019 season with the Houston Astros in which he posted a 20-5 record, American League-best 2.50 ERA and 0.90 WHIP en route to a second-place finish in Cy Young voting.
