England captain Joe Root still believes his side has a chance of claiming a unlikely test victory over the Black Caps.
With Black Caps captain Kane Williamson at the crease with Ross Taylor, NZ still have their superstar batsmen at their disposal and a weather forecast that points at rain arriving in the afternoon.
Root and Pope were in one-day mode by the time New Zealand had their first breakthrough of the day, as the latter holed out at deep-square leg for 75 off a Wagner bumper to end a 193-run stand in 62.3 overs.
"It is a bit frustrating that it is set at 2pm to be the end of the world here on Tuesday".
Root was beaten by a Tim Southee scuttler that just whistled past off-stump although the England captain dispatched the seamer for four with a shorter delivery that did not get up as expected.
When play resumes on the final day of the last of two tests, New Zealand will be 96-2 for two in their second innings - trailing England by only five runs. "They've got huge amounts of experience and are class players, so it would give our guys a lot of confidence for sure".
While the New Zealand attack were willing, the field was spread out in an effort to stymie the boundaries but Root and Pope were able to intersperse the odd four with some hard running in-between the wickets.
Jeet Raval decides not to review LBW decision, but replays show he hit it.
Root's third double hundred - he made 254 against Pakistan at Old Trafford in July 2016 and 200 not out versus Sri Lanka at Lord's two years prior to that - came moments after he had leapt above Wally Hammond and into the top 10 among England Test run-scorers.
"We obviously got into a position where we wanted to move the game forward a little bit and speed things up, and with the weather potentially coming in, give us a chance to force a game", Root explained.
England must win in Hamilton to draw the two-match series. A good couple of wickets tonight, it would have been nice to get a couple more.
"I have always felt like the runs were around the corner", he said.
"There will be one big last push from everyone to try and come away with a levelled-up series".
