Jakub Vrana and Garnet Hathaway each scored two goals for the Washington Capitals in a 5-2 win against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Tuesday.
Melker Karlsson scored on the 2:33 mark of the first period for the opening goal of the game, but the Capitals quickly took over. With nine goals and 31 assists through 29 games this season, he joined Bobby Orr and Al MacInnis as the only defencemen in the expansion era to reach 40 points in the first 30 games of a season.
"I think there is a lot of luck involved and I'm playing with a lot of great players", Carlson said. We had a very good start to the season and everyone was tied, making good games and getting good shots.
Carlson scored the first goal of the match for Hathaway and Vrana, before scoring his own while the Capitals got another win.
"He's been special to watch all year and not just on the offensive side, but how's he's played overall", coach Todd Reirden said. "He is a bit of the leader of the country and taking on this responsibility is important". San Jose lost for the third time only in 14 games.
"They're such a good team that when you don't play well they're going to make you pay and they certainly did", Sharks captain Logan Couture said. "They scored five goals here and could probably have seven or eight". Joner made a few stops. We left him out to dry like we've done multiple times at the start of the year.
"Disappointing", Jones said. "We were a little flat".
After an official review, Kane was awarded a five-minute degree by elbow and misconduct in the game. Reirden did not have an immediate update on the state of Gudas.
The Capitals erased their early deficit with a scoring spree late in the first period, starting when Carlson's point shot deflected off Hathaway and in for the equalizer as Washington's fourth line delivered. "That's what we had imagined since the beginning of the season and now that we have found them, they have returned to the same path".
Just 53 seconds later, Vrana redirected a shot from Carlson off the post and knocked in his own rebound to make it 2-1.
San Jose coach Peter DeBoer said: "We've got to be better". "Momentum shifts are a big thing in this game, and we're real good at turning the momentum around". Hagelin had one shot on goal and a plus-1 rating in 12:21 in his first game since missing 11 with an upper-body injury. Sharks D Brent Burns became the fourth defenseman to play 500 consecutive games, joining Keith Yandle (823), Jay Bouwmeester (737) and Karl Alzner (624). Patrick Marleau played his 1,518th game with San Jose, tying Boston's Ray Bourque for fifth-most with one team.
Capitals: Visit the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night.
That will be harder to do this time, as the Sharks start a four-game trip on Thursday in Carolina against the Hurricanes.
