"Fresh Off the Boat" has reached its final port: The ABC comedy starring Randall Park and Constance Wu will end early next year after completing its sixth and final season. Instead of the series finale airing as a two-parter over two weeks, the series will close with an hour-long episode on Friday, February 21.
'The success of Fresh Off the Boat has helped pave the way for inclusion throughout the industry.
Inspired by chef Eddie Huang's memoir of the same name and adapted for television by Nahnatchka Khan, "Fresh Off the Boat" has become the longest-running broadcast TV sitcom about an Asian American family. "We'll miss the Huang family and are eternally grateful for the incredibly heartfelt stories they have told these past six seasons", Karey Burke, president, ABC Entertainment, said in a statement. Viewers also watched the show's three child actors, Hudson Yang, Forrest Wheeler, and Ian Chen, who play Eddie, Emery, and Evan Huang, respectively, grow into adolescence and evolve as actors.
"I'm so proud of the show and what we've accomplished over the past six seasons", said series creator Khan.
ABC and 20th Century Fox Television, which produces the show, declined to comment. In this final season, the Huang family is at a crossroads.
Set in the 1990s, the series follows the experiences of hip-hop-loving Eddie Huang and his family, who have moved to suburban Orlando. It was truly a special experience and hopefully will forever be a reminder of all the stories out there that deserve to be told.
Talking to the Los Angeles Times, she said: 'I'm dramatic.
Wu would later explain that she was simply "temporarily upset" because the show returning meant she "had to give up another project that I was really passionate about".
Star Constance Wu reacted strongly after the show was renewed for a sixth season back in May, taking to Twitter to write: 'F***ing hell'.
In May, Burke addressed the controversy for the first time and whether there had been discussions to recast her role of matriarch Jessica Huang. This time, however, she and her fellow cast members were mum on the cancellation on social media.
Fortunately, ABC intends to say goodbye to Fresh Off the Boat in grand fashion. She was later cast as the lead alongside Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers, which opened to critical acclaim in September and has earned Oscar buzz for Lopez.
