The departure comes as Pompeo faces increasing pressure from House investigators over his recently revealed presence on a phone call in which President Donald Trump pressured Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden - Trump's potential Democratic rival - and Biden's son Hunter.
Whereas McKinley has no longer been without delay interested with Ukraine, he has served as a conduit between Pompeo's office and profession workers, in line with the Washington Publish, which first reported his resignation Thursday evening. Pompeo was anticipated to problem a press release Friday about his departure, the newspaper reported.
A person familiar with the situation said McKinley felt that Pompeo had been a positive force when, compared with his predecessor Rex Tillerson, in terms of encouraging alternative views within the department, as well as lifting a Tillerson freeze on promotions and prohibitions against spouses working overseas.
Concern has been especially high for Marie Yovanovitch, the then-U.S. ambassador to Ukraine whom Pompeo recalled from her post when a right-wing media campaign accused her of disloyalty.
McKinley could not be immediately reached for comment on the report and declined to comment to the Washington Post.
"I protect every single State Department employee", Pompeo said. "He told me for lots of good and sufficient reasons for him and his family he wanted to go on and begin the next phase of his life", he told WKRN-TV, a CNN affiliate.
