A nine-page letter from Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) cites information studies that hyperlink Perry to the July 25 cellphone name by which Trump sought a Ukrainian probe into allegations that former Vice President Joseph Biden had "stopped the prosecution" in that nation of his son, Hunter.
Shaylyn Hynes, a spokeswoman for Perry, has said he wanted Trump to speak with the Ukrainian leader on energy matters related to USA efforts to boost Western energy ties to Eastern Europe.
The subpoena, issued by House Intelligence Committee in consultation with Oversight and Reform and Foreign Affairs committees, requested that Perry produce relevant materials by October 18.
Earlier this week the House committees subpoenaed Defense Secretary Mark Esper and White House budget chief Russell Vought as part of the impeachment investigation.
The subpoena likewise demands records detailing Perry's role in transforming the management framework at a Ukrainian energy company, Naftogaz, a move that could have held a number of benefits for authorities dealing with Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani.
Last week media reports claimed Perry is planning on resigning, though he has adamantly denied those reports. "No, there wasn't", he said Thursday in comments to the Kyiv Post. It is just the latest in a series of subpoenas issued by House Democrats to administration officials and others as they investigate Trump's contacts with Ukraine in the wake of a whistleblower complaint alleging that President Donald Trump pressured the Ukrainian President to solicit interference in the 2020 election by urging him to investigate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden's family.
"I don't know why they'd be calling all these people" as part of the impeachment inquiry, Trump said.
Perry met with counterparts from Ukraine and Poland this week to underscore an agreement meant to ease the way for USA -produced natural gas to be shipped to Poland and then piped into neighboring Ukraine.
