"We were pleased with the outcome and I thought some of the performances, particularly from some of the young lads, were really good". Azpilicueta reminded everyone that Chelsea have been in tough positions in the past when John Terry, Petr Chech and even Lampard himself left the club.
"We have great support over here and we've seen that at the hotel every day with the fans coming to see us", he said.
And Kovacic is relishing the chance to work with Lampard, who is already putting his new players through their paces in pre-season. Despite the usual reports from the dressing room of disharmony between players and manager, Azpilicueta claimed the Chelsea players do not choose their managers.
"I have a way of working that can be taxing on the players and we wanted to get straight into it", he said. We turned it around and got the Europa League at the end.
Chelsea's mannequins have become the unfortunate victims of Frank Lampard's return to the club as the head coach prepares to wrap up his first pre-season trip in charge of the Blues. We are very excited and the only way we can carry it on is by winning together, getting the feeling back of being all together as a club.
And Azpilicueta has hailed the impact his former team-mate has had on Chelsea's squad, acknowledging that displays under former coach Maurizio Sarri were not always up to scratch. 'We knew that to replicate the success of the great players in the past was hard but every year we've had the chance to bring trophies back to Stamford Bridge. No manager before has been willing, but something tells us that Lampard's arrival could be the making of him. 'We're not going to win anything thinking about the past, complaining. As well as reconnecting with the fans, Lampard could also bring a unifying presence to a dressing room with a reputation for turning against its leader. 'Now, the next stage for him is as a manager and he is our boss. 'We are delighted to have him as a manager. "We have to because we want fitness and intensity in our game. We have to take responsibility and know that there is a lot of things around us and we have to work hard to get it better".
