A U.S. Attorney's office spokesman says singer R. Kelly has been arrested on federal sex-crime charges in Chicago. Kelly was arrested by the New York Police Department and federal Homeland Security agents, a law enforcement source said.
The Grammy victor, whose real name is Robert Kelly, pleaded not guilty to 11 new sex assault charges last month.
News of the new charges comes weeks after Kelly's lawyers sought to have a Chicago judge dismiss a lawsuit that alleged the artist sexually abused a minor in 1998.
Kelly has been arrested on federal child pornography and obstruction of justice charges.
R. Kelly appears at a hearing at Leighton Criminal Court Building on June 26.
Back in 2008, he was brought to trial when a video circulated which allegedly featured Kelly having sex with a girl as young as 13.
In July of 2017, BuzzFeed published an explosive article describing accusations that Kelly retained a group of adult women against her will as part of what some of her parents said was a "cult".
In February, the embattled star was charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving four victims, three of whom were underage.
Kelly has been the subject of abuse allegations for almost two decades, with some reports dating back as far as 1998.
The 52-year-old has always denied allegations of sexual misconduct. Kelly pleaded not guilty to the charges. "Y'all trying to kill me!" he said as he pounded his chest.
In March, he was taken into custody for failing to pay child support, the Cook County Sheriff's Office said.
"Believe me, man! This is not me!"
