Amazon goes on to say that holding on to this data, as well as data related to recurring alarms or placing meetings on calendars, is done so for the sake of convenience and repeatability.
The company also notes that when customers interact with an Alexa skill - such as when they place Amazon Fresh orders, request an Uber or Lyft, or order a Domino's pizza - that "Amazon and/or the applicable skill developer obviously needs to keep a record of the transaction".
This admission will only add fuel to the fire.
Those lawsuits alleged that "Alexa routinely records and voiceprints millions of children without their consent".
Due to the ability for customers to review interactions through the Voice History feature, transcripts must be associated with a customer's account and thus, aren't anonymized.
Sen. Chris Coons of DE sent a letter to Amazon's CEO Jeff Bezos in May this year concerned about how the Alexa software stored its information. According to a CNET article, this came about due to their recent report that claimed Amazon did not delete information even after a user deletes voice recordings made on Alexa.
"While I am encouraged that Amazon allows users to delete audio recordings linked to their accounts, I am very concerned by reports that suggest that text transcriptions of these audio records are preserved indefinitely on Amazon's servers, and users are not given the option to delete these text transcripts".
Amazon has confirmed that stored data obtained through voice interactions with Alexa and Echo devices aren't always deleted.
The company noted that it may "still retain other records of customers' Alexa interactions, including records of actions Alexa took in response to the customer's request". Third parties get to keep them, too.
One security expert pointed out that Amazon is not alone in holding onto people's data.
Alexa is the smart assistant that performs all sorts of tasks on your devices, from calling a salon for appointment to shifting songs according to your requirements. To delete a recording, tap it, then tap Delete voice recordings. "Removing all this data on your own isn't hard, but most people don't bother, and those who do probably don't do so regularly". That data is used to train Alexa.
It's easy enough to delete your voice recordings though.
Not to be outdone by Chromecast Audio, Amazon has its own audio dongle called Echo Input, including Bluetooth, a microphone and a 3.5mm jack.
