Finch pointed out that Australia's past two games had been played on pitches used for the second time in a matter of days and said India's spinners trumped his.
India pacer Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar scalped three wickets each as India bundled out Australia for 316 runs, winning the match by 36 runs. He further added that Smith's fine batting ability against the spinners was the other reason to take that decision.
"If it's past 35 overs, you're probably not going to do it (bat Khawaja at four), Glenn Maxwell is going every day of the week after that".
"The run out happened at a really crucial time (the 14th over)". Meanwhile, Khawaja played a knock of 42 runs off 39 balls. He feels that they are one of the best opening partners in world cricket.
Despite all this, Ponting still has full faith in both the openers as he said: "Finch and Warner are probably as good as openers in the world".
After returning to the global cricket, Warner has scored 89*, 3 and 56 runs in this Cricket World Cup.
Warner scored an unbeaten 89 off 114 balls against Afghanistan but his uncharacteristically sedate 56 off 84 balls against India had put pressure on the batsmen later on. By his own admission today, (Warner) probably wasn't at his absolute best.
Chasing down that big target, Australia managed to score 48/0 in the first ten overs. "It seems to be doing a little bit more than what I've seen it do over here".
The dazzling all-rounder said Warner and captain Aaron Finch "hit the field too much" in the first 10 overs, recording just 10 singles.
"It was always going to be a hard task".
Ponting feels that Finch's run out happened at a really crucial time as the team had just started to get momentum. "The momentum had just started to turn there, Finchy had started to find the boundary a bit more frequently", he said. "There's certainly enough skill and enough talent to turn it around pretty quickly", he added.
The 2-1 Aussies are set to swing a bowling change when they look to bounce back from just their fourth loss from their past 47 World Cup games against Pakistan on Wednesday.
