Most are from outbreaks in NY in Orthodox Jewish communities. This figure marks the highest annual case count since 1992, when the CDC reported 2,237 cases.
The number of cases of measles in the United States this year has surpassed 1,000, the US Department of Health and Human Services said Wednesday.
The CDC has been implementing a number of initiatives to combat the spread of the disease, including deploying a field team to Rockland County to help diagnose cases, identifying 1,500 people who were exposed to measles while traveling. The World Health Organization notes that, in temperate regions, measles cases tend to peak in the winter and early spring, which would suggest that the accumulation of new cases will now fall off from the levels seen earlier this year.
The disease's resurgence can mostly be traced back to un- or under-vaccinated travelers who brought the infection back with them from overseas - that's what happened previous year when cases were reported throughout the country, originating from the Philippines, Israel and Ukraine.
Vaccines are a safe and highly effective public health tool that can prevent measles, says the USA health secretary, as the nation grapples with a resurgence of the contagious respiratory disease.
Clark County in Washington state had the second-largest outbreak in the U.S. this year with more than 70 cases reported.
The disease has mostly affected children who have not received the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, which confers immunity to the three infectious diseases. A rash that is red, raised, blotchy usually starts on face, spreads to trunk, arms, and legs 3-5 days after symptoms begin.
To protect yourself, doctors recommend immediate vaccination.
And if you have to cough or sneeze, use your sleeve or a tissue - but not your hands, the CDC says.
"We cannot say this enough: Vaccines are a safe and highly effective public health tool that can prevent this disease and end the current outbreak". "The measles vaccine is among the most-studied medical products we have and is given safely to millions of children and adults each year". According to him, people should talk to their doctor about the type of vaccines that can protect them from measles.
