The verdict today was delivered by the jury just hours after they began deliberating at 9:25 a.m. local time in the NYC borough this morning - a surprisingly short deliberation, though perhaps indicative of how well the jury felt federal prosecutors made their case.
The cult leader, alongside other high-ranking members of the cult including USA actors and celebrities, was found guilty of racketeering, sex trafficking, forced labor and fraud.
Marc Agnifilo and Paul DerOhannesian, legal councils representing Keith Raniere, speak to the media after the guilty verdicts in the sex trafficking and racketeering case against Nxivm cult founder Keith Raniere were announced at the Brooklyn Federal Courthouse in New York, US, on June 19, 2019.
Prosecutors said the 58-year-old Raniere's organization, called NXIVM, was more like a cult.
Raniere's sentencing is set for September 25.
"This was a very frightening group", Oxenberg said.
Among the disturbing accusations presented in the trial is that Raniere created a sex slave "pyramid", keeping women loyal through blackmail and manipulation, and encouraged his followers to abort their children in the interest of his sexual desires.
Based in Albany, New York, the group was founded as Executive Success Programs in 1998 and says it has worked with more than 16,000 people.
Among the more damning allegations against Raniere were that he had some women branded with his initials and that he started having sex with a follower when she was 15.
"She's in shock", Oxenberg was heard saying of her daughter.
Mack, who played Superman's friend Chloe Sullivan on The CW TV series, was believed to be the leader of DOS, described as a "secret sorority" that allegedly brainwashed members, put them on starvation diets and beat them if they don't recruit enough "slaves".
DOS slaves were forced to hand over nude photos and embarrassing confessions and told that the material would be released if they disobeyed orders or tried to leave, according to a former member and other witnesses.
"His crime, and the crimes of his coconspirators, ruined marriages, careers, fortunes and lives". The child pornography charges stem from explicit pictures he took of the girl, who went on to become one of his inner circle of DOS slaves. Four other women also previously pled guilty to lesser charges involved with helping run NXIVM.
Raniere was arrested previous year along with several other members of the group, including former "Smallville" actress Allison Mack, wealthy Seagram's liquor heiress Clare Bronfman, and NXIVM president Nancy Salzman and her daughter, Lauren.
