To date, 12 people have walked on the moon, as part of NASA's Apollo program.
To make matters even murkier, Trump seemed pretty gung-ho about going to the moon just a month ago.
For all of the money we are spending, NASA should NOT be talking about going to the Moon - We did that 50 years ago. In December 2017 Trump signed a directive to send astronauts to the moon, with the goal of expanding the mission to Mars and potentially other parts of the solar system. However, it is likely that Trump's "Mars (of which the Moon is a part)" comment referred to NASA's talking point that going to the moon again would help efforts to later reach Mars.
Collins said that many experts consider the moon as a gateway to Mars, but that he stands with the minority view that going to Mars should be the priority.
Buzz Aldrin visited the moon.
"As JFK famously said, "We choose to go to the Moon not because it is easy, but because it is Mars, '" 'Daily Show" employee Jason O. Gilbert joked. In October Mike Pence, the vice-president, said: "Our determination is to see Americans back on the moon in the very near future". One hour before the president offered his take on the moon's origin and his criticism of Nasa, Fox News guest Neil Cavuto had expressed scepticism over a moon trip.
The White House did not immediately respond to a Guardian question about whether Trump's statement should be considered official guidance.
It's unclear whether Trump's anti-moon missive is just a passing thought, or if it might spark a change in his administration's policy to push for a NASA moon return more than 50 years after Apollo 11 landed the first humans on the satellite's surface.
