On Sunday night, sports fans were shocked to learn that Boston Red Sox great David Ortiz was shot and wounded in his native Dominican Republic.
Authorities have both men in custody but have only identified the driver.
Reports indicate Ortiz does not know Feliz Garcia, who has a criminal record involving drug trafficking. He first underwent surgery at a hospital in the Dominican Republic, where "Big Papi" was born and raised.
Red Sox president Sam Kennedy said at a press conference in Boston on Monday afternoon that doctors "have confirmed that David's condition is still serious" but that he had been stabilized enough to be flown to a Boston hospital for further treatment. She also expressed appreciation to Dr. Larry Ronan and his staff at Massachusetts General for caring for Ortiz.
Another one of Ortiz's former Red Sox teammates, Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez, who also hails from the Dominican Republic, broke down in tears while talking about Ortiz on Monday night during a broadcast on the MLB Network.
On Tuesday, Tiffany released a statement through the Boston Red Sox to thank the franchise for their efforts to have a plane ready for him to take him from his hometown in Santo Domingo to bring her 43-year-old husband home.
Two other people were injured during the ambush, including television presenter Jhoel López; police said they were investigating whether Ortiz was the intended target.
"Doctors say that David is out of danger, thank God", Ortiz's father, Leo Ortiz, told ESPN. "A lot of times I see guys who play on my team coming to the United States to live".
"I would reach back grabbing his hand and driving with the other", Salvador said of the ride to the hospital.
Obama referenced Ortiz's famous speech at Fenway Park in April 2013 ("This is our f--ing city!") just days after the Boston Marathon bombings that helped unite the city in a time of distress.
