Health officials in northern Virginia are warning the public about potential exposure to measles after a child in the region contracted the illness.
If symptoms develop, Ms. Andrew-Spear said people should stay at home and isolate themselves from others and call a health care provider or department. In fact, the US Department of Health and Human Services recently said that the number of measles cases in the US this year has surpassed 1,000.

Measles is a highly contagious but preventable disease.
Azar reinforced the importance of vaccines in combating the outbreak. People who received two doses of measles vaccine - either the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine or a measles-only vaccine - need not worry, the agency said.
The virus often manifests as a combination of high fever - as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit - along with cough, runny nose and pink eye, according to Dr. Julia S. Sammons, a pediatric infectious disease specialist and medical director of the Department of Infection Prevention and Control at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
The second stage begins around the third to seventh day when a rash begins to appear on the face and spreads over the entire body.
"I'm a parent - I understand that concern - but again, the message really is around if you have actually come into direct contact with a case of measles you would know that because we would have contacted you, public health would have contacted you", said Russell. Those who have received only one dose of a measles vaccine are probably not at risk, but a second dose would ensure complete immunity. Measles symptoms usually appear in two stages. The agency also urged people with symptoms to call ahead to alert the staff that they could be infected with measles.
