For this year's World Environment Day, UN Environment has asked individuals around the world to choose an action that they will undertake to reduce air pollution while wearing a mask and post a photograph on social media using the hashtags #BeatAirPollution #WorldEnvironmentDay.
This year, China is hosting World Environment Day.
Air Pollution in India takes a toll during the fag end of the year making it hard to breathe as well. My message to governments is clear: tax pollution; end fossil fuel subsidies; and stop building new coal plants.
The World Environment Day is tomorrow, i.e. June 5 and like every year, there is a theme this time as well.
A range of events are to be held in multiple cities in the country, with the main event in Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province. Air pollution is the cause of 7 million premature deaths each year and according to the United Nations, 9 out of 10 people breathe polluted air.
According to the recent estimates, more than 90 percent of the world's population breathe polluted air. Deaths and illnesses from air pollution are caused by tiny particles that penetrate our defences every time we fill our lungs.
More than 205 million people in Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, and Brunei are expected to move to cities by 2050, the study concluded. With this event, the United Nations has urged individuals around the world to choose an action that they will undertake to reduce air pollution, photograph themselves performing the task while wearing a mask and then share the image on social media, tagging other organisations or individuals they wish to get involved in the challenge.
"Failing to ensure clean air constitutes a violation of rights to life, health and wellbeing, as well as the right to live in a healthy environment".
"States must take urgent action to improve air quality to fulfill their human rights obligations", he added.
