The New York Jets fired Maccagnan today according to multiple sources and Adam Gase has been given the interim general manager duties and full control over the football team. "Mike helped to execute the strategic vision of the organization during the last four seasons and especially the past few months".
If you're a NY sports fan who puts your support behind the Knicks and Jets, well, you've had better days.
The timing is odd considering Maccagnan oversaw the Jets' draft less than three weeks ago, although there were rumors that he and Gase had some tension - which both denied. There were some rumors, however, that there was tension between Maccagnan and Gase - which both denied.
"I don't know who decides to put that stuff out there", Gase said.
ESPN reported that Brian Heimerdinger, the Jets' vice president of player personnel, also was sacked as part of the team's front office shake-up. "We have discussions on everything". Maccagnan was hired in 2015, days before the franchise hired Gase's predecessor, Todd Bowles. In New York, Gase was butting heads with general manager Mike Maccagnan but that has come to an abrupt end. The Jets just allowed Maccagnan to do everything from overseeing the hiring of Gase as head coach to signing Le'Veon Bell in free agency to scouting and drafting all the Jets' new prospects taken in last month's National Football League draft.
One day after the Knicks missed out on winning the National Basketball Association draft lottery, the Jets reminded the sports world why they continue to be a laughingstock of the NFL. The Jets also added wide receiver Jamison Crowder from the Washington Redskins and trade for offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele from the Oakland Raiders.
Philadelphia Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas, who is believed to be close to Gase, could be the man to replace Maccagnan fulltime, ESPN reported.
