A new space on Blue Origin's website describes the lander as being capable of "precise and soft landings" to enable "a sustained human presence on the Moon". According to Bezos, Blue Origin can make that happen by the short deadline because 'we started this three years ago.' Bezos also called for humanity to return to the Moon 'and this time stay'. It's often forgotten, but Blue Origin demonstrated that a rocket could be reused before SpaceX.
Bezos didn't reveal too many details on Blue Moon, however, he discussed how the lunar rover could help future generations travel to space, should there be limited resources on Earth in the future.
Blue Origin states that it has a larger variant of the Blue Moon lander that can land an ascent vehicle - something the company specifically mentions as a possibility for taking Americans to the lunar surface by 2024.
While Bezos went out of his way to praise Pence's timeline, the billionaire has been the target of repeated criticism from President Donald Trump, who has referred to him as Jeff "Bozo".
Blue Origin is based in Kent, Wash., and has built out a 750,000-square-foot plant for its New Glenn rocket just outside Kennedy Space Center. It is aiming to deliver the New Glenn rocket by 2021, while launching humans in a suborbital flight later this year atop its rocket-and-capsule New Shepard.
"We were given a gift - this nearby body called the moon", Bezos said. "It's in the form of ice".
In addition to announcing the moon lander, Bezos spoke at the event about his hopes to create floating spacecraft for human colonies in the future, an idea he has touted in the past.
A site near the south pole of the Moon was named after Shackleton - a crater with rims that are exposed to nearly continual sunlight.
The company dropped a possible hint about the announcement with a Twitter post last month of a picture of the ship used by explorer Ernest Shackleton on an expedition to Antarctica - a possible reference to an impact crater on the lunar south pole sharing the man's name.
