Mr Shorten, who has led Labor for six years, has instead emphasised his team's stability and policies on climate change, cost of living and health.
"I don't think anyone who has been following me around the country for these last five weeks, five weeks ago thought this is where the election would be the day before".
Former Labor PM Julia Gillard tweeted that he was "the greatest peacetime leader Australia has ever had" and sent her condolences to his family, while Kevin Rudd - Ms Gillard's predecessor and successor - called him "a giant of Australian politics".
He was the most electorally-successful Federal Labor leader in history: the victor of four successive elections and the longest-serving Labor Prime Minister.
"With his passing, the labour movement salutes our greatest son, the Labor Party gives thanks for the life of our longest-serving Prime Minister and Australians everywhere remember and honour a man who gave so much to the country and people he cared for so deeply", Shorten said. They urged voters to see Saturday's ballot as essentially a fight between Mr Morrison's aspirations and Shorten's reforms.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison will be hoping to remain in power.
"Through his many years in politics, he was a true and genuine friend of our leaders including successive prime ministers".
Australia is one of a few countries that have made voting compulsory. Failure to vote without an acceptable excuse attracts an A$20 ($21) fine.
You might also say he had a Labor heart but a Liberal head. Labor was formed by striking sheep shearers meeting under an Outback tree in 1891. In 65 years of competing at elections, Liberal-led coalitions have been more successful than Labor.
Queues are not expected to be quite as long as in previous years.
Surveys have shown that the economy, cost of living, environment and health are central concerns for voters. Labor has pledged to reduce Australia's greenhouse gas emissions by 45 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030 and achieve zero emissions by 2050.
After describing Hawke as "Labor's greatest Prime Minister", Abbott tried to steal some of Hawke's glory by claiming some of the Labor icon's greatest achievements for the Liberal party, and taking a shot at Bill Shorten in the process.

At the global level, Hawke, along with then-French Prime Minister Michel Rocard, introduced a proposal that was adopted as the Madrid protocol, which unambiguously banned mining in Antarctica.
