Nye is an advocate for the Green New Deal, and both him and Oliver backed it on the HBO show Sunday night. Oliver is known for his very raw takes on politics, pop culture, and the environment, so it was only right that Nye followed suit.
"By the end of this century, if emissions keep rising, the average temperature on Earth could go up another four to eight degrees", Nye says. There are a lot of things we could do to put it out. are any of them free? No, of course not.
The Green New Deal's main proponent, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), rightly "admits the rollout of the Green New Deal was "the biggest mistake" she's made in Congress", largely because she released a draft Q&A that contained what's "clearly supposed to be a joke" about getting rid of "farting cows and airplanes", Oliver said, thus allowing certain named "idiots to pretend the Green New Deal was all about hamburger-stealing".
Later, Nye and Oliver dedicated much of their time to explaining "carbon pricing". Look out, because while you might not typically associate angry talk with the normally-mild-mannered "Science Guy" Nye, when it comes to the threat of global climate change, he has - understandably, perhaps - lost his patience. "Got it? Safety glasses off motherf-ker".
"Bill, please, please!" Oliver begged. You're not children anymore. Nye stated, "Here, I've got an experiment for you. Putting a fee on carbon creates incentives to make less carbon and more importantly, it incentivizes the development of low carbon technology". And because for some reason, John, you're a 42-year-old man who needs his attention sustained by tricks, here's some f-ing Mentos and a bottle of Diet Coke.
Nye yelled, "Grow the f*** up!"
With that proclamation, Nye pulled out a blowtorch and blasted the globe, which immediately burst into flame.
"I've got an experiment for you".
"I didn't mind explaining photosynthesis to you when you were 12".
