And while the National Football League doesn't decide who appears on the cover of the EA Sports video game, for the Chiefs, landing Mahomes on Madden cover will help accomplish the NFL's goal of using personal brands to drive consumers toward fandom of the National Football League and specific teams.
So, it wasn't much of a surprise when Mahomes was announced as the cover athlete for the Madden 20 video game.
"It is awesome and definitely a full circle moment for me", Mahomes said during an interview with The Associated Press before the cover was revealed.
In his first season as the Chiefs' starting QB, Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns during the regular season and led them to the AFC championship game for the first time since 1993.
The Chiefs quarterback's "Madden 19" rating reached a high of 94.
Mahomes said he was approached by Electronic Arts prior to the Pro Bowl in late January about appearing on the cover. In it, players can assume the identity of a quarterback and take him through a journey beginning with the College Football Playoff and ending with the ultimate goal of becoming a franchise quarterback.
And now, his star status is further cemented with the coveted Madden cover.
Every year EA Sports releases a brand new version of their ultra-popular Madden series. New England's Tom Brady was on the cover two years ago.
Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster has been campaigning to be on the cover although considering Brown was on it a year ago, it would be surprising if JuJu got it. EA Sports included Smith-Schuster as part of their promotional campaign leading up to the reveal as they showed him who's on the cover. Last season's cover, for example, featured Antonio Brown.
