President Trump's comment also follows a closely-watched summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Thursday in which, the US President asserted that he wanted to retain the sanctions imposed on North Korea while he worked towards getting the denuclearisation talks back on track with Kim. "I have high regard for Chairman Kim's unwavering commitment".
It's hard for Moon to make further progress on inter-Korean engagement without some level of sanctions relief, which Washington says won't come until unless Kim commits to verifiably relinquishing his nuclear facilities, weapons and missiles.
"We are willing to give another try if the USA offers to have a third summit with the right attitude and mutually acceptable terms", he said, according to a report by North Korean state media outlet KCNA. "South Korea alliance and play the role of safeguarding the peace of Northeast Asia, we need a strong military", Moon said, according to Yonhap. Trump hailed the decision, saying a third summit with Kim "would be good".
But Kim also stressed that the DPRK would not be interested in a repetition of February's summit between the two in Hanoi, which concluded without a deal amid disagreement over sanctions. -North Korea summits, he added.
"Now is the time to fully prepare for a summit of North and South", Moon told gathered officials.
Moon has supported civic exchange with the North.
Kim blamed the collapse of the second summit with Trump on what he described as Washington's unilateral demands.

On South Korea, Kim said Seoul "should not act as an "overstepping mediator" or a "facilitator" and should rather get its mind straight as a member of the (Korean) nation and boldly speak up for the interest of the nation". He hailed Kim's willingness to talk with the United States, vowing to help resume dialogue between the DPRK and the United States. Although they described the exercises as defensive in nature, the United States and South Korea have downsized the drills to create a space for diplomacy with North Korea, which sees them as invasion rehearsals.
Kim's speech came after North Korea's Supreme People's Assembly made a slew of personnel changes that bolstered Kim's diplomatic lineup.
