When Winston started to finally get shots to drop, though, he took over and there wasn't much anyone could do about it.
Michigan and Michigan State (both 15-4 in conference) enter Saturday's contest deadlocked for the top spot in the Big 10, along with the No. 11 Purdue Boilermakers. Winston should win the Big Ten Player of the Year, and if he's able to lead the Spartans to a season sweep over MI, he will certainly be at the top of the list. However, the highly seeded Spartans bowed out of the NCAA Tournament in a disappointing second-round loss to Syracuse.
Things appeared to be swinging in Purdue's favor at the end of the third as Harris sparked an 8-1 run to make it 42-41 with just seconds left in the quarter, but the Scarlet Knights banked in a 3 at the buzzer to push the lead back to four and recapture the momentum.
"That's the way it's supposed to be", said MSU coach Tom Izzo, an advocate for a strong rivalry with the Wolverines.
The Spartans then pulled away, winning easily in a game MI controlled for more than 20 minutes.
The run got to 19-4 as Winston continued to take over, scoring on a drive and layup to give Michigan State a 59-52 lead with 7:55 to play. Seven different Terps scored, while Lewis finished with 2 points to go along with her eight assists and three rebounds. Winston is a do-it-all point guard who can go for 20 points on any given night.
MI built a nine-point lead at the beginning of the second half.
"He'll go through warmups and he'll let us know how he feels", Beilein said. This will give the two seniors, Matt McQuaid and Kenny Goins even more of a reason to get down on the floor and kiss the Spartan logo on their last home game of their careers.
"I'd say, 'Yeah, it is, '" Izzo said. "For him and Smitty (Steve Smith) and those guys to come back was cool".
Charles Matthews #1 of the Michigan Wolverines celebrates his buzzer beater game winning shot to beat the Minnesota Golden Gophers 59-57 with Ignas Brazdeikis #13, Jon Teske #15 and Jordan Poole #2 at Crisler Arena on January 22, 2019 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
"I nearly gave in, but I didn't", Izzo said. "He just doesn't feel right".
Now, the model has locked in on Michigan vs. Michigan State. "They could've had Ward in there". Ward might be able to play in the conference tournament and likely can contribute a little at least in the NCAA Tournament. They also need to shoot the ball better.
It marked the second straight year that Michigan State has raised a banner in its home finale. "Our goal coming into the year was to win a Big Ten championship, and we felt like we put ourselves in a good position to do that tonight".
MI will have a few days to prepare for the Big Ten tournament.
