This week, the earth will get to experience the second supermoon of the year. On February 19, the Moon will be just 356,846 km away from the Earth, in contrast, this year's farthest full moon on September 14, 2019 will be at 406,248 km away from our planet. January's coincided with a total lunar eclipse-an event where the moon passes directly through Earth's shadow.
So what is a supermoon?
The phenomenon happens when the moon is full at the same time as, or very near, perigee - its closest point to Earth on an elliptical, monthly orbit.
The next supermoon will take place on March 21, just four hours after the March equinox-when day and night are the same length, with days in the northern Hemisphere getting longer thereafter.
Each month, the full moon carries a different name signifying what is most associated with that time.
According to Metservice meteorologist Tui McInnes, Auckland, Marlborough, Wellington and Nelson were expected to be the best locations to see the moon.
The moon looks particularly large because it's at its closet point to Earth. Any bro who says that they saw a significantly bigger and handsome moon is lying.
