Large crowds were seen carrying Iranian flags and chanting "Death to Israel, Death to America" - trademark chants of the revolution - on Azadi Square in Tehran today.
One banner read: "Much to the dismay of America, the revolution has reached its 40th year".
The large turnout at these state-sponsored rallies comes as Iranians faces rising prices and food shortages which have triggered waves of protests.
In comments on Sunday, Hossein Taeb said the fifth decade of the Islamic Revolution would mark the Iranian nation's "harsh slaps" in the face of the U.S. and its mercenaries, whom he said will have to "pay heavy prices" for hostility towards Iran.
Soldiers, students, clerics and women holding small children flocked to the streets of cities and towns, many carrying portraits of Khomeini and Iran's current Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
"The Iranian people have and will have some economic difficulties (due to the sanctions) but we will overcome the problems by helping each other", Rouhani said. -Gen. Hossein Salami, deputy head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
"The United States does not have the courage to shoot a single bullet at us despite all its defensive and military assets", he was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA. Revolutionaries later began executing supporters of the Shah including four top generals.
Highlighting the failure of hostile plots to foment insecurity in Iran, the cleric said his organization will publicize more cases of defeat of the enemies in the intelligence arena in future.
Some Iranians criticize their leaders for what they say are foreign adventures which squander funds. Rather, they are directed at national leaders.
