A statue of Emperor Haile Selassie, the last emperor of Ethiopia and a longtime ruler who served from 1930 until his overthrow by the Marxist regime in 1974, was unveiled outside the African Union's headquarters in Addis Ababa on Sunday.
Several African leaders at the current African Union summit and relatives of the emperor attended the statue unveiling ceremony.
Uhuru was in Addis Ababa to attend the 32nd African Union Heads of State and Governments Summit which kicked off on January 15, 2019, and is expected to end on Monday, February 11.
"Terrorism remains a cancer that affects African nations and steals the dreams of our people and we must identify and combat those who fund terrorism activities on the continent", Sisi said in a speech to the AU assembly shortly after his appointment.
El Sisi's elevation to the ceremonial leadership of the union marks his full rehabilitation.
Continental leaders, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, will urge him to push administrative and financial reforms introduced by his predecessor Rwanda's President Paul Kagame.
"During his time in power, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has demonstrated a shocking contempt for human rights".
It is recalled that the statue of Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana's former president was also built within the African Union compound a few years ago for his contribution for the foundation of OAU. "There are real fears about the potential impact his chairmanship could have on the independence of regional human rights mechanisms and their future engagement with civil society".
During his tenure, Kagame dramatically challenged the election results in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
