In a deal quite reminiscent of the accord struck between the Reed Hastings-run streamer and Disney back in 2013 for four new series and The Defenders team-up limited series, Hulu and Marvel today unveiled four new original adult animated series and a The Offenders team-up special. Out of all these off-kilter announced series, this one-even with only a vague description-seems most poised to feel refreshing compared to the usual Marvel comic-TV fare. Comedian Patton Oswalt is set to produce MODOK, while Chelsea Handler will produce Tigra & Dazzler and Kevin Smith will produce Howard the Duck.
As you can see, every show has "Marvel's" in the title. But the news also emerges days after Marvel's corporate parent Disney talked up sweeping content plans for its own upcoming video-streaming service, Disney Plus.
Marvel fans have long wanted Kevin Smith to take on the foul-mouthed Howard the Duck character, and those dreams are finally coming true. There have been successful Marvel animated series for Disney channels, but nothing for adult Marvel fans. Both will executive produce the series with Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb.
Trapped in a world he never made, America's favorite fighting fowl Howard the Duck hopes to return home with the help of his unstoppable gal pal Beverly before the evil Dr. Bong can turn him the crispiest dish on the menu, in "Marvel's Howard the Duck".
Marvel's M.O.D.O.K. centers around an egomaniacal supervillain with a really big head and a really little body, who struggles to maintain control of his evil organization and his demanding family.
Marvel's Hit-Monkey tells the tale of a wronged Japanese snow monkey, mentored by the ghost of an American assassin, as he cuts a wide swath through the Tokyo underworld in this darkly cinematic and brutally amusing revenge saga. Also in production are animated series based on M.O.D.O.K, Hit-Monkey, and Tigra and Dazzler, who will all team up with Howard the Duck in a special dubbed The Offenders. "Marvel's Howard the Duck" comes from writersKevin Smith and Dave Willis, with Smith, Willis, and Jeph Loeb serving as Executive Producers. "We're so excited for what's to come!" exclaimed executive producer Jeph Loeb, Head of Marvel Television.
