Le tueur en série d'homosexuels Bruce McArthur condamné à la perpétuité — Canada

Tous ces hommes avaient été portés disparus dans le quartier gai de Toronto entre 2010 et 2017. Un jardinier canadien de 67 ans a été condamné, vendredi 8 février, à la prison à perpétuité sans possibilité de libération avant vingt-cinq ans, pour avoir mutilé et tué huit hommes ayant fréquenté la communauté homosexuelle de Toronto.

Il aura donc 91 ans lorsqu'il pourra formuler une demande de libération.

"À Toronto, le juge John McMahon a expliqué que le plaidoyer de culpabilité de McArthur constituait un facteur atténuant, tout comme l'âge que le tueur en série aura atteint avant de pouvoir demander une libération conditionnelle".

L'histoire avait défrayé la chronique l'an dernier.

Un meurtre au premier degré est automatiquement passible de la prison à vie sans possibilité de libération conditionnelle avant 25 ans.

Comme dans le cas d'Alexandre Bissonnette, à Québec, c'est la période d'admissibilité à la libération conditionnelle qui constituait la seule question à régler pour McArthur - les deux accusés avaient plaidé coupable. L'accusation avait réclamé une peine de 50 ans de prison incompressible pour Bruce McArthur, l'un des pires tueurs en série que le Canada ait connus.

McArthur a admis avoir tué Andrew Kinsman, Selim Esen, Majeed Kayhan, Dean Lisowick, Soroush Mahmudi, Skandaraj Navaratnam, Abdulbasir Faizi et Kirushna Kanagaratnam.

Le tueur a aussi agressé sexuellement et séquestré plusieurs de ses victimes avant de les assassiner, a-t-on appris au tribunal. Il a ensuite photographié leur cadavre, souvent avec le même manteau de fourrure. Le tribunal a appris que McArthur conservait ces images dans des dossiers sur son ordinateur, étiquetés pour chacune de ses victimes, et qu'il a consulté certaines de ces photos longtemps après les meurtres.

Selon la police, il a profité de son emploi de jardinier-paysagiste pour enterrer les corps démembrés de sept de ses victimes dans des jardinières d'un client, chez lequel il entreposait également son matériel. Les policiers l'ont arrêté en janvier 2018, après l'avoir suivi pendant plusieurs semaines.

Sa décision de plaider coupable avait été accueilli avec regret par les proches des victimes.
