Andrew Mangiapane gave the Flames a 1-0 lead at 7:06 of the first period.
The Penguins are continuing their three-game homestand that began with a 3-1 win against Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night on Feb. 13; continues with a match-up against the Calgary Flames on Saturday afternoon on Feb. 16; and ends with a match-up with the New York Rangers on Sunday afternoon on Feb. 17. They are four points behind the Washington Capitals for second place and are seven points behind the Metropolitan Division leaders the New York Islanders. These two teams last played in Calgary on October 25, 2018, in which the Penguins won that game by the score of 9-1.
After missing the Penguins' last 53 games, defenseman Justin Schultz has been activated off injured reserve.
Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists for the Penguins, who had won their previous two.
Malkin almost pulled Pittsburgh back from a 5-2 deficit with goals at 5:42 and 14:41 of the third period.
"We didn't love our trip, to be honest with you", said Flames head coach Bill Peters.
"Except for those five or six minutes there in the third, I think we played a good game", Zuccarello said.
Before he was relieved by Casey DeSmith for the start of the third period, the Penguins' Matt Murray allowed five goals on 24 shots, though his performance was at least in part attributable to shoddy defense and bad luck. Oliver Kylington took a slap shot that hit Nick Bjugstad's stick and went past Kris Letang before going off Mangiapane.
"We made it a little harder than we would've liked by putting them on the power play".
Frolik gave the Flames a 2-1 lead at 1:39 of the second when he got to a rebound and scored on a backhander.
Ninety-three seconds after that, Czarnik's third of the season was a shot from the top of the left circle that deflected off the stick of a Penguins defender.
Hamonic's shot from the right-wing wall hit Guentzel's stick on its way past Murray to make it 4-2 at 16:02 of the second period.
"Obviously, there's stuff you still want to clean up, but everything's moving back to where it was when we were buzzing", Smith said. The Flames moved into second in the National Hockey League in goals. "[Pittsburgh is] a good team there". We felt good coming into this game after [a 3-2 shootout loss to the Florida Panthers on Thursday], even though we didn't get two points.
NOTES: Flames C Derek Ryan had three assists, the second three-point game among the 210 he's played in the National Hockey League.
Matthew Tkachuk has gone cold on the offensive end, and the assist he picked up against the Penguins was his first point in seven games.
Not taking the lead during the four-minute power play that spanned the second intermission was crucial to the game's outcome. Penguins LW Tanner Pearson was a healthy scratch for the second consecutive day after he had been in the lineup for every game since his acquisition from the Los Angeles Kings in November.
