George Clooney hasn't been a regular presence on TV since ER - but now he's back!
Catch-22 is set in Italy during World War II and tells the story of Captain John Yossarian (Abbott), a U.S. Air Force bombardier, and the other airmen in his camp, who attempt to maintain their sanity while fulfilling their service requirements so they can return home.
Although there can be many "Catch-22" situations, we need only concern ourselves with Yossarian's dilemma. But he is also furious at his own army that keeps giving him more and more missions and puts his life at risk. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to avoid his assignments, he'll be in violation of Catch-22, a bureaucratic rule which states that a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly risky combat missions, but a request to be removed from said duty is evidence of sanity and therefore makes him ineligible to be relieved from duty.
So when Yossarian avoids the missions, he is deemed sane by his superiors and thus can not quit.
The playful, farcical tone on display in this trailer brings to mind some of Clooney's work with the Coen Brothers, including the underrated Burn After Reading.
But at least Clooney has a stellar cast to support him, with a cast including Laurie as Major de Coverly, delivering a delicately oddball performance in this teaser, and Chandler as the ruthless Colonel Cathcart.
The series looks true to source material and seems to be shot beautifully.
Catch-22 will premiere on Hulu on May 17, 2019.
