When Dorsey was asked at the press conference where the team stands on violence against women, he deferred to ownership and said, "I'm not going to be the spokesperson for the organization with regards to that".
Hunt, a 2017 third-round pick out of Toledo who starred at Cleveland-area Willoughby South High School, led the National Football League with 1,327 rushing yards in his rookie season and was well on his way to another big year in 2018, amassing 824 rushing yards, 378 receiving yards and 14 total touchdowns as a key cog in the NFL's highest-powered offense, before it came to an abrupt halt when video of the incident surfaced.
Hunt was released by the Kansas City Chiefs once video leaked of his physical altercation with a woman. Hunt is just 23 years old and he had 14 touchdowns last season - seven rushing and seven receiving.
Dorsey selected Hunt in the third round of the 2017 draft and the Willoughby South High School and Toledo product wasted little time showing the league what a dynamic player he is on the field. "What it does is you have three very quality, really four quality individuals".
"I heard speculation it might be the whole season", Balzer said. "What you have to do is you have to go back and research your options and see moving forward what's best for the organization".
"I've known him since 2016 and I've found him to be a neat, young guy", Dorsey said.
"First off, I would like to once again apologize for my actions a year ago". There are also multiple incidents that emerged from his past that are now under evaluation by the league. That is not the man I was raised to be, and I've learned a great deal from that experience and certainly should have been more truthful about it after the fact.
However, some of the fans were open to give Hunt a second chance, while also noting that the Browns have gotten a solid player to join a powerful line up of their running backs.
"I think if he begins to follow the plan that we laid out on a day-to-day basis, then he begins to not only earn the respect of the people within the Cleveland Browns organization, he begins to gain the respect of the people in the community", Dorsey said. We hope Hunt is committed to being a better person, that he realizes he absolutely can't strike a woman, that he will emerge from a bad 2018 as a different man.
Dorsey expects backlash for the decision to sign Hunt, but feels he knows Hunt well enough to believe he's changed. "I truly believe he'll be a better man today than he was yesterday". For now, he'll be on the commissioner's exempt list, according to Albert Breer of The MMQB.
Hunt is not expected to play for the Browns in September and maybe not in October. The Browns have Nick Chubb, who ran for 996 yards as a rookie, and Duke Johnson Jr., who signed a three-year contract extension in June.
