In Italy, where the current governing coalition had pledged to drop a law banning children without vaccination from starting pre-school (the coalition has since reversed its position), health officials have declared a 'measles emergency, ' as nearly one quarter of all measles cases in Europe in 2017 were reported in Italy.
At least 70 people, mostly children under the age of five, have died from measles in the Philippines since the start of the year.
President Duterte himself will now step up and appeal to the public to have their kids vaccinated following the declaration of a measles outbreak in different parts of the country, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said Sunday.
"The ACT Government funds measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine for adults".
The World Health Organisation says that more children in the European Region are being vaccinated against measles than ever before, but progress has been uneven between and within countries. Measles outbreaks in 2017 led to the Americas to lose its measles elimination status in 2018.
The current case comes at a time when travellers are being warned that measles is prevalent in South and South East Asia and while the World Health Organisation is saying that record numbers of people have been infected with the virus in Europe. All regions in the country have been affected by this crisis.
NSW Health said that outbreaks of measles in popular tourist destinations mean the risk for measles being imported into Australia at the moment is high. Measles vaccination rates at the outbreak's epicenter are now up by 500 percent, and lawmakers in Washington are proposing a bill that would no longer allow parents to cite philosophical or personal reasons for not vaccinating their child.
"We should prevent vaccine hesitancy from undermining the decades of progress that we have already achieved in systematically reducing vaccine-preventable deaths and eliminating numerous fatal and debilitating diseases in our country", she added. "A deteriorating socioeconomic situation in Venezuela has had a significant impact on its health infrastructure, including its immunisation services", the report stated. Having been free of diphtheria for 24 years, Venezuela has now experienced more than 1600 suspected cases between 2016 and the middle of 2018.
The letter cited the latest DOH Philippine Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (PIDSR) report showing that out of nearly 22,000 cases of clinical measles-rubella reported between January to December 2018, there were 5,120 confirmed measles cases. Once these early symptoms have been present for a couple of days, patients may develop white spots - also known as Koplik Spots - inside their mouths.
Symptoms of measles include a fever, red eyes, cough, a runny nose, along with a rash. The spots may become joined together as they spread from the head to the rest of the body. Most people recover within a week or two.
