Since his release, the 2017 NFL rushing champ has been working with the league to begin a treatment and counseling program, according to a league source. While the Eagles are going to be in the market for a new running back, it seemed doubtful that they would go after Hunt, given that they have avoided players with off-field controversies on several occasions at this point, excluding Michael Bennett.
Hunt was the NFL's leading rusher back in 2017 as a rookie, but was cut last season following the release of a video tape that showed him committing assault in a Cleveland hotel. Apparently, Hunt has landed a short-term, one year deal with the Browns.
Setting aside the horrific video that went public and led to his release from the Chiefs, there is the business of football to now consider with the signing of Kareem Hunt, and his impact on the field and on the 53-man roster for the Browns. Hunt is just 23 years old and he had 14 touchdowns last season - seven rushing and seven receiving. It took time, he said, to figure out everything there was to know about the incident, get the opinions and feelings of others in the organization - owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam included - and conclude whether or not Hunt was truly sorry for what he'd done.
"I am committed to following the necessary steps to learn and to be a better and healthier person from this situation", Hunt said.
"I'm a work in progress as a person, but I'm committed to taking advantage of the support systems that I have in place to become the best and healthier version of myself", Hunt's statement read.
"There were two important factors: one is that Kareem took full responsibility for his egregious actions and showed true remorse", Dorsey added.
Looking at the free agent market for running backs, Le'Veon Bell, Jay Ajayi, Mark Ingram, Tevin Ingram, C.J. Anderson, Spencer Ware, Alfred Morris, and Alfred Blue are just a few of the potential names out there. Dorsey drafted Hunt while working as general manager of Kansas City.
The Browns will likely receive backlash for their decision to sign Hunt. He had a monster start to his career, putting up 246 scrimmage yards and 3 touchdowns in his first career game and scoring six times in his first three weeks. Cleveland already has some impressive offensive playmakers like quarterback Baker Mayfield, wide receiver Jarvis Landry, running back Nick Chubb, and tight end David Njoku. From this, we learned that he was untruthful about his actions and did not seek help to correct his violent behaviors until after the video was released and he lost his job in the NFL.
