In 2011, tweeted Hart thus: "When my son comes home with the doll house my daughter plays, I'm going to make it about his head broken and say: "stop, that's gay".
Gadsby's comedy features strong social commentary on a number of LGBTQ issues, and she is openly lesbian, which would provide a robust contrast with Hart's past homophobia. Just two days after being named as the host of the glittering Oscars awards night (February 25, 2019), Hart has withdrawn as there was a public backlash over a few of his homophobic tweets in the past.
Hart's offensive tweets were posted almost a decade ago and were well known, but it's current backlash has booted him out of the host gig this year. Since resigning, the LGBTQ media watchdog group GLAAD has since said they wished Hart hadn't stepped down.
It's not the first time an Oscars host has been derailed by anti-gay remarks.
Capping a swift and dramatic fallout, Hart wrote on Twitter just after midnight Thursday that he was withdrawing as Oscars host because he didn't want to be a distraction.
By Thursday morning, a few publications had written articles about them and the outrage escalated.
But if there is an art to the apology process, comedian and actor Kevin Hart ran afoul of it this week and toppled himself as host of the next Academy Awards.
'A Comedian says something that offends people and refuses to apologize? F*** 'em if they can't take a joke! Approximately 48 hours later, Hart stepped down from the prestigious post.
"We were hoping that this was going to turn into a teachable moment, that Kevin Hart would still be hosting the Oscars and he would be using this moment not only to show his evolution around the LGBTQ community but also to then use the Oscars stage, one of the biggest stages in the world, to help build unity and awareness around the LGBTQ community and how we are marginalized in this country", Ellis continued, adding that she has been in contact with Hart's representatives.
If Hart had simply apologized for his anti-gay jokes, he could've kept the hosting gig. He bowed out on his own, and with an apology. Some have said Ellen DeGeneres, who hosted one of the Oscars' highest-rated shows, or Tom Hanks, who has a longstanding academy relationship.
Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele, Will Smith or Lin-Manuel Miranda are other names in the mix. Philips also proposed Issa Rae, Sarah Silverman, Ali Wong, Samantha Bee, Robin Thede and Aisha Tyler, or "any other woman working in Hollywood right now who wants to".
Stephen King suggested Patton Oswalt (He's "funny, sharp-tongued, and he knows film", King tweeted.) Some have even proposed Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty.
"Reason why I've passed is because I've addressed this several times".
But the film academy will need to move quickly.
