Michigan State has done well with the recruits it has landed through the years, but it always stings the locals when guys like Carey go elsewhere on a regular basis and that's sure been the case with Duke and MSU or late. The center is a top-5 ranked players in the country and is the prized possession in this current recruiting class for Duke.
"The reason I chose Duke was Coach K", said Carey of head coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Michigan State also tends to prioritize recruits from the Midwest, so the focus on Vernon Carey Jr has been a little out of character for the program. "His nimble footwork and soft touch is not talked about enough at his physically imposing size". Over his last two games, the freshman put up 53 points in 53 minutes on 22-of-28 shooting, logging 23 rebounds, dishing 11 assists and grabbing four steals.
Carey joins Wendell Moore, a five-star forward and Boogie Ellis, a four-star combo guard, among high school recruits in the 2019 class who have pledged to Duke, giving the Blue Devils a top-10 class nationally.
Carey is the son of former Miami Dolphins lineman Vernon Carey. If Jones leaves for the league, as many have predicted due to him being projected as a first- or second-round draft pick, it would be a feather in the cap of the coaching staff on the recruiting trail.
Duke has dominated the recruiting wars in recent years. Coach K evolved his coaching system and revamped Duke as both a perennial contender and a one-and-done factory for the National Basketball Association.
