Barr has also extolled the rule of law and the value of an independent judiciary, which wouldn't be noteworthy coming from an attorney general normally but matters given Trump's attacks on the institution.
Mr. Trump also nominated State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as the next US ambassador to the United Nations, yet Rosenberg notes she has "virtually no diplomatic experience".
"Neurat stood alongside the State of Israel in its previous positions and I have no doubt that the cooperation between the two countries will also continue to strengthen during her service", Danon said. Democrats called Nauert unqualified and said they were concerned about Barr's independence.
Eventually, according to one unnamed source, Trump spoke to Barr in the White House about the job, asking "if he was interested", per the report.
The proposed changes come as the Republican president faces another hard stretch. More details of the inquiry were set to emerge in court filings on Friday.
From 1991 to 1993, Mr. Barr served as Attorney General in the administration of President George H.W. Bush, and Agudath Israel had occasion to work closely with him on issues of concern to the Orthodox Jewish community.
Confirmation hearings are unlikely before January, when Republicans will have a 53-47 majority, leaving Democrats powerless to block the nomination unless four Republicans break ranks. Critics of Trump have always been concerned that the president wants to end the Mueller probe.
Campaign records show that Barr has made campaign contributions to Republican Party committees and candidates in recent years, including $55,000 to the failed presidential campaign of Trump's rival, Jeb Bush, the elder Bush's second-oldest son. Senator Chuck Grassley called him a "talented, well-respected lawyer". Trump said, "He was my first choice from day one".
Barr has criticized aspects of the Russian Federation investigation, including suggesting that Mueller hired too many prosecutors who had donated to Democratic campaigns, said the NYT report.
Barr also may face scrutiny about past comments questioning the political affiliations of Mueller's team and supporting Trump's decision a year ago to fire FBI Director James Comey.
As the Washington Post's Aaron Blake reported, after an untimely indictment of Caspar Weinberger, Regan's defense secretary, days before the 1992 election (which Bush lost), Barr reportedly considered firing Walsh for "misconduct", though he never did. She oversaw public diplomacy in Washington and all of the roughly 275 overseas US embassies, consulates and other posts.
According to an i24 News report, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon on Friday welcomed Neurat's candidacy for the post now held by Nikki Haley, who has worked closely with Danon, largely aligning the USA with Israel in the UN.
But Trump has also used the United Nations to try to advance his foreign policy agenda on Iran and North Korea.
Critics have said that while Ms. Nauert may have significant journalism credentials, she lacks foreign policy or other equivalent experience required for the United Nations job. The pick was controversial because of Whitaker's background, and because Trump bypassed the normal order of succession to put Whitaker, who was close with the White House, in charge.
