Instacart has about 1,400 in-store shoppers across different Whole Foods markets, the company said, adding that about 240 will be affected beginning February 10. For Whole Foods specifically, the multi-store shoppers will still be able to pick, pack and deliver from Whole Foods stores nationwide until the exit. In recent months, Instacart branding has disappeared from Whole Foods stores.
On Thursday, Instacart said its partnership with Whole Foods is "beginning to wind down", with the online grocery-delivery service wrapping up in-store shopping operations at Whole Foods markets during the next few months.
In Dallas-Fort Worth, Instacart said on its website that it delivers from Albertsons, Aldi, Central Market, Costco, Kroger, Market Street, Natural Grocers, Sam's Club, Sprouts Farmers Market, Tom Thumb.
Amazon's $13.7 billion purchase of Whole Foods rocked the U.S. grocery space in 2017 and the e-commerce giant has since steadily increased the speed of delivery throughout its system, including by expanding one-day and one-hour delivery. The vast majority of Instacart shoppers work across multiple retail partners rather than a single grocer, and these shoppers who also shop Whole Foods will not be impacted.
Instacart is looking to make its mark in Canada, and September it announced "Instacart North", a Toronto office that the company is looking to staff up with 200 new employees across engineering, product, design and R&D. The company has more than 300 retail partners, and it delivers from a total of more than 15,000 stores across 4,000 US and Canadian cities.
